Farm Boys

GT is all over the Emmerdale boys in our exclusive cover shoot and intimate chat with the fellas.
It’s probably not as easy as you’d think. You’re young actors, playing what you hope will be perceived as a hard-hitting but realistic interpretation of gay life in a Yorkshire village. And then suddenly you’ve got people getting a little bit obsessed with you, or worse, shouting abuse at you.
So a little trepidation is understandable as Danny Miller and Marc Silcock, who play Aaron and Jackson in Emmerdale, undertake their first photoshoot together. It’s obvious they’re uncomfortable – Danny’s not doing any more topless shots as he’s ‘just done four in a row’ and wants to make it clear that he’s an actor, burying his head in his mobile.
You can’t dispute the claim, given that he’s been acting his socks off in a series of events that saw his character, Aaron, come to terms with being gay. Along the way Aaron beat up his stepfather, punched his potential boyfriend, tried to commit suicide and only avoided a prison sentence by tearfully coming out on the stand. We’ve all done it. No?
As well as appearing on the cover of Britain’s longest-running gay mag – a big enough deal for two straight-lads – they’re getting ready to shoot their first proper kiss the following day…

How’s the reaction been to your storyline?
Danny: It’s quite overwhelming to be honest. For example, when the producer asked if I wanted to play the story line, I’d never ever have expected it to go to the heights it’s gone to.

Did anyone give you any guidelines as to how you should play gay?
D: No, certainly not to me.
Marc: I came into the part just as an audition basically, so I was just told the general outline of the story. Me and Danny just met at the screen test and had a quick chat before and ended up doing our first scenes together and really we’ve just been bouncing off what we’ve been doing in the scenes, and chats here and there. But there have been no guidelines for us, and I feel a lot of trust has been put in us, especially into Danny with the performances he’s been having.

Danny, Aaron’s got quite a lot of crying going on. How do you do that?
D: Some of the time it’s quite easy just to think of bad thoughts. I usually think of thoughts no one would want to think of really. Like my dad dying and stuff like that. It’s no good just having the tears you know, you’ve got to have the emotion behind it as well. And it’s been good, since I’ve come to the show two years ago I still haven’t had any challenging stuff. I’ve only had things like smashing windows and stuff like that, so now that I’ve been given this it’s given me the chance to have a bit of a challenge. And I’ve enjoyed it, because it’s such an interesting story line.
